Cyberattack Knocks Millions Of Blogs Offline

Today, beginning around 4 pm Pacific time a significant DDoS was unleashed on the website provider Six Apart. This site hosts millions of blogs and was unavailable for some time. A Distributed Denial of Service is a collection of computers all attacking a target at the same time making it unable to process legitimate traffic.

Six Apart intends report the attack to the authorities, such as the FBI, but hasn’t done so yet, Dash said. “We have not yet had the time to think about the next steps yet,” he said. The San Francisco company has some theories on the origin and motivation of the attack, but Dash declined to speculate.

Six Apart plans to compensate their customers for the trouble. It would appear that Technorati may have fallen victim to a DDoS attack as well. It was unavailable this evening for some time.
