It turns out that there are some flaws in the Intel kernel drivers. At this point this not something that is being exploited but, be aware that as with anything in this business that could change in the blink of an eye.
“It was difficult to find something that was useful for us,” David Schulhoff, a senior information security specialist at Intel, said Monday in a presentation at the Computer Security Institute’s annual NetSec event. “There really are not that many Windows kernel-mode driver vulnerabilities out there.”
That’s not to say that they are not in existence. Malware writers by and large tend not to be great coders. There is usually little care taken in preparing their menagerie of wee beasties. Now, if there was a writer that had the skills and the wherewithall to exploit Intel driver flaws…this could be very very bad.
driver flaws have been getting more attention recently. Microsoft, for example, is readying tools for driver developers to scan their code for common vulnerabilities. The Redmond, Wash., software giant is worried that insecure drivers might end up hurting systems running Windows.
Intel’s internal security group basically dismissed the vulnerabilities as being impossible to exploit at this point. OK, but much like the weather in Canada, wait 5 minutes for that to change.
