Seven Year Sentence For Piracy Website Owner

A major software pirate from Los Angeles is going away for seven years. Yup, seven years. Nathan Peterson, 27, from LA was selling software for a fraction of its actual cost. Well, the FBI shut down his site and now he’s out of circulation.

US District Court Judge TS Ellis III on Friday ordered Peterson to pay restitution of more than $5.4m. Peterson pleaded guilty in December in Alexandria, Virginia, to two counts of copyright infringement for illegally copying and selling more than $20m in software.

Justice Department and industry officials called the case one of the largest involving internet software piracy ever prosecuted.

Here is a case where someone got what was coming to him. That and a strong rationale for using/creating open source software!
