OK, first we saw a host of Republicans lose their jobs, then Rumsfeld lost his job. Loving the pace so far. Now we have the US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is lashing out against, well, the law. Gonzales is of the opinion that critics that oppose the illegal wire tap program “were defining freedom in a way that presents a “grave threat” to U.S. security.” Hmm, well, you see the problem here is that Gonzales has a problem with the law. Now, this is where things get a little interesting. I fully believe and respect the institutions that exist such as NSA and the CIA. They serve a very necessary purpose. However, the part where I tend to take issue is with the abuse of power. How does that phrase go again? Absolute power corrupts, yadda yadda. Well, this is a very real worry. And who do we see up at the front of the shortbus? Gonzales.
Gonzales was the second administration official in two days to attack a federal judge’s ruling last August that the program was unconstitutional. Vice President Dick Cheney on Friday called the decision “an indefensible act of judicial overreaching.”
I guess we managed to lose Rumsfeld. That at least is a start. But, the fact that we have dangerous characters spouting off that the legal system, which is in place to keep lunatics from becoming drunk with power, is over stepping its bounds is absurd. The Bush White House has, apparently, broken the law but, rather than face up to their misdeeds they resort to their time tested strong arm routines.
Gonzales, Bush and the remaining cadre are doing a massive disservice to the men and women that guard against the things that go bump in the night. Rather than using scare tactics against the US public they should let the NSA and CIA do their job….legally.
