Computer Glitch Delays Japanese Flights

I travel a few times a year. Nothing like the earlier times in my career where it was not out of the question to be in 3 different cities for meeting in one day.

I hated those days.

Folk in Japan suffered a really bad travel day on Sunday when the computer systems for All Nippon Airways pulled a HAL.

Information flow between the intermediate computers and host computer was slowed by the glitch leading to a backlog of data that eventually clogged the system. The slowdown, which meant data was coming in several times slower than normal, eventually caused 130 cancellations and delays of more than an hour for 306 flights. Around 69,300 passengers were affected, said Henderson.

The part of the story that I found a little disconcerting was that “problems began to resolve themselves on Sunday afternoon”. Er, I see? Followed later in the article by “ANA doesn’t yet know the cause of the problem”.

Um, OK. Think I’ll reschedule that flight to Tokyo.
