There are a lot of security conferences to pick from out there. We have Black Hat, CanSecWest, HITB, and Shmoocon to name a few (very few). Toronto, Canada has gone wanting for a security conference for years. There was the Infosecurity Canada conference but, in all fairness it was more akin to the RSA Security conference in San Francisco. Not real down in the weeds security speak. At RSA I was struck at the fact that there was 10 salespeople for every tangentially security types. An example of this was the throngs of t-shirt harvesters that attended RSA. I myself walked away with 20+ t-shirts and I was actively passing on them.

Now, Toronto has a conference that we Canadians, and our US cousins for that matter, must attend. Sector is a new offering that positions itself as a the Canadian Black Hat.

From the Sector website:

Mission

SecTor is destined to become Canada’s premier IT Security Education Conference. The annual event where IT professionals from throughout Canada can learn from and network with the world’s most innovative, intellectual, exciting and entertaining security professionals. SecTor is IT Security Training at its best.

Background

SecTor was created by founders of TASK, North America’s largest and most successful IT Security Usergroup. After many years of attending IT Security events in the U.S.A. and being disappointed that no similar event existed in central Canada, the decision was made to fill the void.

In a non-threatening and productive way, SecTor sheds light on the underground threats and mischief that threaten corporate and personal IT systems. Through identifying, discussing, dissecting and debating these digital threats, the strongest defences can be mounted.

There are some great speakers that will be showing up this year which, incidentally, is the inaugural launch. Some of the speakers of note are Johnny Long, Joanna Rutkowska, Dan Kaminsky and Richard Reiner.

For all of those folks in Ontario that have griped about not having a local security conference that you can attend, it’s here.

(full disclosure: I have been helping with the set up of this conference)
